Rise of the Tomb Raider - Guide to Crafting and Equipment

Updated: 9/14/16()

Item crafting is an important new facet of gameplay in Rise of the Tomb Raider. Lara can now make many useful objects from things she finds in the wilderness. This page includes a list of all Crafting Ingredients. Below that are tables of formulas Arrows and Special Ammunition, Miscellaneous Items including IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVES, and finally Equipment like quivers and ammo pouches. A few of Lara's outfits also require crafting. These are covered on the separate Outfits page.

This site also has a search function in case you're having trouble finding anything.

CRAFTING INGREDIENTS

You will not have access to every ingredient at first. The game gradually introduces them as they are needed. Check the relevant sections of the walkthrough for more information. Certain Skills improve Lara's ability to find both natural and man-made crafting resources.

There are two ways to see how many of each item you have in your inventory: The quick list at the top right corner of the map screen shows the most commonly used resources. (screenshot) There's also a more detailed 'Resources' section under the hex-nut-shaped icon at the top left. (screenshot) Lara can craft various containers to increase the amount of each resource she can carry. See Equipment, below.

ITEM DESCRIPTION INTRODUCED
COMMON
Cloth Pieces of fabric used for healing and upgrading weapons and equipment.

Found in pryable wooden crates, boxes/containers of random supplies, hidden in buried Survival Caches, and occasionally when looting enemy corpses.
Siberian Wilderness
Herbs Restorative plant used in conjunction with cloth (above) for healing.

Found on bushes with red berries, predominantly near sources of water (both frozen and liquid). Also in baskets containing herb twigs, boxes/containers of random supplies, and in buried Survival Caches.
Siberian Wilderness
Hide Animal skin used for crafting equipment and weapon upgrades.

Acquired primarily by hunting and skinning animals, such as rabbits and deer. Larger prey yield more hides.
Siberian Wilderness
Salvage Surplus metal fragments used for weapon upgrades and equipment crafting.

Found in pryable wooden crates located near inhabited areas, occasionally inside metal lockers, and on enemy corpses. Their icon looks like a hex nut.
Siberian Wilderness
Mushrooms Toxic fungi used for crafting noxious ammunition and weaponry.

Found primarily inside rotting tree stumps and in dank, underground spaces. Occasionally found in boxes/containers of random supplies and in buried Survival Caches.
Siberian Wilderness
Hardwood Strong branches used for crafting arrows, weapon upgrades, and certain pieces of equipment.

Obtained by stripping the branches off birch saplings. Also occasionally available as bundles of sticks left behind by other people, found in boxes/containers of random supplies, and in buried Survival Caches.
Siberian Wilderness
Feathers Sturdy vanes used for fletching when crafting arrows.

Found in birds' nests, which usually need to be shot down from high places. Also obtained by hunting birds and occasionally found in boxes/containers of random supplies, and in buried Survival Caches.
Siberian Wilderness
Oil Flammable fuel used in crafting burnable ammunition and weaponry.

Found in yellow oil cans in settled areas, also in small pools ringed with rocks. Note that you will find oil cans a few levels before you actually have a way to collect and use oil.
Geothermal Valley
EXOTIC
Boar Fat Slick substance used as a lubricant in weapon upgrades and equipment crafting.

Obtained by hunting razorback boar that appear in muddy areas, more often during rainy weather. Areas where boar are likely to appear are noted in the walkthrough and marked on the in-game maps with boar icons. Boars respawn after some time has passed, so it pays to revisit areas you've explored before.
Geothermal Valley
Deer Antler Rigid bone used for weapon upgrades.

Harvested from stag deer with large antler racks. Stags may also yield hide.
Siberian Wilderness
Exotic Hide Dense, strong material used for crafting high-quality equipment. Distinguished from regular hides by the magical sparkles around the icon. ;)

Harvested from white wolves that appear only at night (and only randomly as far as I know), stag deer that mostly appear during clear weather, and large cats such as lynxes and snow leopards. Areas where these creatures tend to spawn are mentioned in the walkthrough and marked on your in-game map with animal icons. Even exotic animals respawn after some time has passed, so stay alert when revisiting their hunting grounds.
Soviet Installation
Magnesite Ore Flammable mineral used for creating incendiary equipment and and ammunition.

Found in veins on the walls of tunnels and caves. Approach a magnesite vein and press Interact to mine it using your climbing axe. Also found in lumps on the ground near mining sites and industrialized areas.
Siberian Wilderness
Bear Hide Thick hide used for crafting high-end equipment.

As you'd guess, this resource is obtained by hunting and skinning bears. There are several bears' dens in the game. These are covered in the walkthrough and marked with bear icons on the in-game maps. Bears respawn after some time has passed, so it pays to revisit areas you've explored before.
Siberian Wilderness
Technical Parts Manufactured metal parts used for weapon upgrades.

Technical parts are basically a more refined version of salvage (above). Their icon looks like a coiled spring. Found on the bodies of dead soldiers and occasionally in containers, lockers, and wooden salvage crates. (There's no in-game tutorial about technical parts, but I first noticed them in the Gulag section of the Soviet Installation.)
Soviet Installation
Byzantine Coins Gold currency that can be used to buy items from the Supply Shack.

Not technically a crafting item but included here because they are tracked in the Resources menu. Found in caches revealed by deciphering Monoliths, in cylindrical 'Gifts of Alms' containers, and in small piles left here and there in the game world. There is also one Mission that provides coins as a reward.
The Prophet's Tomb
Chromite Ore Rare mineral used in high-end weapon upgrades.

Once you acquire the Geologist Skill, chromite can be mined from ore veins in caves and underground spaces, or found in lumps on the ground.

To create a zip line, stand near a rope-wrapped post and shoot a rope arrow into another rope-wrapped object. To rope-swing across a gap, stand near the edge and shoot a dangling rope coil. Lara will shoot a rope line and swing across automatically. Shooting rope arrows does not expend any ammo, so you can't run out.

Rope Ascender Modern military rope climbing device. Used for quickly traversing rope lines. Hold the Interact button while hanging from a rope line to quickly ascend. Purchased from the Supply Shack in the Soviet Installation
Lockpick An old hand-crafted lock pick set that shows considerable signs of wear. Used for opening locked strongboxes and doors. Reward for completing a mission in the Soviet Installation

NOTE ON CRAFTING TOOLS: There are four tiers of weapon upgrades. (See the Weapons page for details.) The first tier is available as soon as you acquire each weapon. The others are unlocked when you obtain each of three tools: the Crafting Tool, the Enhancement Tool, and the Refinement Tool. You'll find two in strongboxes in the Abandoned Mines and The Acropolis and buy the third from the Supply Shack. Regardless of whether you find or buy them, you'll obtain the tools in the order listed.
