Aldwych - Missing Items, Save Files, and other Notes

This level is complicated. It's easy to get lost and miss important items or overlook the buttons that open doors in other parts of the level. The main walkthrough includes several notes on how to remedy such situations. Those notes link to the various sections on this page.

There's also a separate section on the so-called "Dropped-Drill Bug."

ROOM WITH STACKED CRATES - TRAPDOOR STILL CLOSED: If, after getting the FIRST SOLOMON'S KEY in the DRILL ROOM, you return to the ROOM WITH THE STACKED CRATES and the trapdoor is still closed, then you missed a button and you'll need to go back and press it now. From the top of the stacked crates, monkey swing across the ceiling grates and drop down near the drill. Cross over the top of the drill and follow the red-and-pink duct to the end. Drop down into the dark room above the tracks. Go through the doorway to the right of the hole in the grating floor. Follow the passageway to the BRICK ROOM WITH FLAME TRAPS, which are now deactivated. Take a running jump across the open shaft into the alcove with the button. Press it to open the trapdoor. Then return to the dark room above the tracks, drop down through the hole in the grating, drop down into the dirt-rimmed pit, go back along the tracks to the WOODEN CRATE ROOM, and climb to the top of the crates. *I'm sorry, but I don't have saves for the Pacific-London-Nevada sequence on the Mac. You could instead download a save from a different sequence, then download new files when it's time to move on to Nevada and, later, Antarctica.

TICKET MACHINES - MISSING OLD PENNY: From the room with the ticket machines, go down the right side escalators. Take a running jump across the dirt-lined pit to the other side. Remember to jump on the right side rather than the left, so Lara doesn't bump her head on the low ceiling. (Check the screenshots for the RIGHT SIDE ESCALATORS AND MAINTENANCE ROOM if necessary.)

On the other side of the pit, go through the doorway onto the train platform. If you turned on the light here earlier, the OLD PENNY will be sitting on the floor just to the left. (screenshot) (Now skip down to the paragraph that starts "Once you have the penny....")

If you didn't turn on the light, check your inventory now to see if you still have the MAINTENANCE KEY. If you have it, head for the other end of this platform and use the key in the lock to open the MAINTENANCE ROOM. Press the button inside to turn on the lights and pick up Uzi clips and a small medi pack. Then return to the other end of the platform to get the penny. (Skip down to the paragraph that starts "Once you have the penny....")

If you don't have the MAINTENANCE KEY but the small, metal door at the other end of the platform is already open, you just need to go in and turn on the lights in order for the PENNY to appear. (Skip down to the paragraph that starts "Once you have the penny....")

If you don't yet have the MAINTENANCE KEY and the small, metal door at the other end of the platform is still closed, you must now retrieve the key in order to open that door. Go back through the doorway to the dirt-lined pit. Take a running jump across and return up the escalators to the TICKET ROOM. Go between the ticket machines to the far left corner of the room and follow the corridor down one flight of stairs. As you step down onto the second flight of stairs, you'll see a square vent on the left. Shoot the vent to shatter it and drop into the alcove to get a save/power-up crystal. Climb the grating ladders to the room above. Now follow the instructions for the ROOM WITH LOW CEILING AND RED METAL GIRDERS, near the beginning of the main walkthrough, to get the key, then the penny. (Here's a link to that section.)

Once you have the penny, return through the doorway to the dirt-lined pit. Take a running jump across and return up the escalators to the TICKET ROOM. Use the OLD PENNY in the fourth machine from the right to buy the TICKET. (screenshot) Then pick up the walkthrough where you left off.

MASONIC TEMPLE - MISSING ONE OR BOTH SOLOMON'S KEYS: If you reach the temple but are missing either of the 2 SOLOMON'S KEYS, you'll need to backtrack for it now. Start by returning through the maze to the train tracks. Turn left and follow the tracks up the purple-lit slope to the train platform with the "Aldwych" signs. Go between the square pillars into the room with the piles of dirt. Turn right and go up the escalators to the TICKET MACHINES. Now, depending on which key(s) you're missing, follow the instructions below.

If you're only missing the FIRST SOLOMON'S KEY, which is found at the top of the DRILL ROOM beyond the ROOM WITH THE STACKED CRATES. Follow the main walkthrough from the section "RIGHT SIDE ESCALATORS AND MAINTENANCE ROOM," here. Once you've picked up the key, climb up into the red-and-pink duct and follow it to the end. Drop down into the dark room above the tracks. Drop through the hole in the grating floor into the room below. Move carefully to the edge of the dirt-lined pit opposite the escalators and take a running jump across the pit to grab the edge. Go up the escalators into the TICKET ROOM. Turn right and go past the ticket machines to the other set of escalators. These lead down to the tunnel that will take you back to the MASONIC TEMPLE. Pick up the main walkthrough there.

If you're missing the SECOND SOLOMON'S KEY, it can be found in the area with the THREE TIMED DOORS. If you did the timed door sequence but just forgot to pick up the key, you can return for it now. From the ROOM WITH THE TICKET MACHINES, go between the machines to the far side of the room, where there's a line of tall floor lamps. Turn left and go through the open metal door beyond the row of lamps. This passageway leads back to the flooded room behind the third timed door. The key is in that room. If you have not yet visited the area with the THREE TIMED DOORS, you'll need to take a different route. From the ROOM WITH THE TICKET MACHINES, go down the right side escalators. At the bottom, drop down onto the tracks and follow them to the ROOM WITH THE STACKED CRATES. Climb up through the trapdoor in the corner of the ceiling. Then pick up the main walkthrough at the section ROOM WITH ROLL-DOWN DOORS, here.

TURNSTILE - MISSING TICKET: If you reach the TURNSTILE above the FLOODED ROOM WITH UNEVEN CONCRETE LEDGES and you're missing the TICKET, you'll need to backtrack for it now.

If you have the OLD PENNY in your inventory, go back through the crawlspace and drop into the pool below. Climb out of the water and pull up onto the next higher ledge. Then climb into the doorway above. If you didn't kill the many dog in this hallway before, do so now as you make your way down the stairs to the train platform below. Turn left into the tiled room with the piles of dirt, then turn right and climb over the dirt to reach the escalators leading up to the TICKET ROOM. Use the OLD PENNY in the fourth machine from the right to buy the TICKET. (screenshot) Pick it up and then go back to the TURNSTILE the way you just came.

If you don't have the OLD PENNY in your inventory, you'll have to get it first so you can use it to buy the TICKET. From the TURNSTILE, go back through the crawlspace and drop into the pool below. Climb out of the water and pull up onto the next higher ledge. Then climb into the doorway above. Kill the dog in the hallway as you make your way down the stairs to the train platform below. Turn left into the tiled room with the piles of dirt. Then turn right, climb over the dirt, then go up the escalators to the TICKET ROOM. Turn left and go through either of the two doorways ahead and down the other set of escalators. At the bottom, take a running jump across the dirt-lined pit. (Remember to jump along the right side where the ceiling is higher, so Lara doesn't bang her head and fall into the pit.)

Go through the tiled room with the dirt piles onto the train platform. Then follow the stairs at the right end of the platform back to the FLOODED ROOM WITH UNEVEN CONCRETE LEDGES. Climb up to the crawlspace as you did before and continue through to the TURNSTILE. Pick up the main walkthrough where you left off.

TURNSTILE ROOM - MISSING ORNATE STAR and/or MASONIC MALLET: If you want SECRET #3, you'll need the ORNATE STAR to unlock the office. In order to proceed to the end of the level, you'll need the MASONIC MALLET. Both are found in the MASONIC TEMPLE. To get back there, exit the TURNSTILE ROOM through the doorway near the wooden crate. Crawl through the turnstile you opened with the TICKET and around to the left through the crawlspace. Then drop into the pool below. Swim through the underwater passageway back to the MASONIC TEMPLE. Head for the opposite corner of the room, where you'll find the MASONIC MALLET in an alcove. To the left of that alcove is a floor-length purple curtain with a break-away tile in front of it. (screenshot) Run across the tile and through the curtain into a little alcove, where you'll find the ORNATE STAR and some MP5 clips. This sequence is also covered in the main walkthrough. When you have what you need, return through the underwater passage to the FLOODED ROOM WITH UNEVEN CONCRETE LEDGES. Climb up to the crawlspace as you did before and continue through the TURNSTILE. Pick up the main walkthrough where you left off.

If you have not yet visited the MASONIC TEMPLE, the underwater tunnel will not be open yet. You still have some exploring to do. Exit the TURNSTILE ROOM through the doorway near the wooden crate. Crawl through the turnstile you opened with the TICKET and around to the left through the crawlspace. Then drop into the pool below. Climb out of the water and pull up onto the next higher ledge. Then climb into the doorway above. If you didn't kill the many dog in this hallway before, do so now as you make your way down the stairs to the train platform below. This is the platform at the bottom of the LEFT SIDE ESCALATORS, only you're coming onto the platform from the other side. Secret #2 is around the corner to the left.
