Stella's Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness Walkthrough

NOTES ON THE REMASTER: At this point I can't guarantee 100% accuracy for this guide. Updates are in progress but will take time. Levels that have been worked on will say "Remaster," rather than "Classic," in the title. In the meantime, I have attempted to provide a running count of all kills and pickups, including totals for health packs, chocolates, sellable items, and cash, as well as notebook entries, which are needed for some achievements/trophies. If I've missed any, I do apologize. Please let me know if you discover anything not mentioned here. Also, in case it's not obvious, these guides are based on classic tank controls, and I have not yet included strats for all achievements/trophies.

LEVEL 27: BOAZ RETURNS (Remaster)

Items: 2 (unlimited Boran ammo)
Kills: 2
Upgrades: none
Notebook Entries: none

Kurtis must now fight the powerful mutant Boaz (1-2). This sequence is probably the most difficult in the game. Boaz is strong. She slashes with her four front claws and bites with her protruding mouthparts. She pukes out streams of toxic liquid that can knock Kurtis off his feet, and by the time he gets up again, she's closing in for the next attack. She can also shoot blobs of green goo from the venom sacs on her sides. If Kurtis gets hit by one of them, he'll be poisoned, and you'll have to use an antidote or large health pack. Kurtis, in contrast, moves like an ice cream truck with two flat tires. But with patience and persistence, Boaz can be defeated.

This boss fight has two main parts: giant armored-beetle Boaz and flying humanoid Boaz. I found it helpful to use the Boran X for the first phase, since Kurtis can jump and backflip—albeit in a limited way—while using the gun. Then, if you run out of ammo, switch to the Chirugai to fight the flier. By all means, change it up if you like, but if you're struggling, hopefully these strats will help.

There are two pickups, respawning Boran clips (1-2), one in the far left corner of the arena, the other near the curved right wall (relative to the starting position). You can go for them as soon as the level starts, wait until you need them, or just ignore them completely. Each pickup gives you 2 clips, and if you run out of ammo, both pickups will reappear. There are also two achievements/trophies: "Took Care" unlocks automatically when you beat the level. "Dodgeboaz" requires you to "evade all of Boaz's projectiles without attacking her during the shelling phase." That is, the part of the fight where she launches blobs of green goo from the venom sacs on her sides. You can unlock this achievement/trophy during any of the "shelling" phases, but it's a bit easier if you attempt it as soon as the level loads.

"DODGEBOAZ" ACHIEVEMENT/TROPHY:

DEFEATING BOAZ'S FIRST FORM:

When she runs out of health, she keels over. Defeating the giant mutant bug (1) counts as one kill. But of course, it's not that simple.

Cutscene: Kurtis turns away from the huge bug. "That wasn't so hard," he quips. But before he can catch his breath, the humanoid Boaz wriggles free from the insect corpse. She stretches her diaphanous wings, lets out a shriek, and takes to the air.

DEFEATING BOAZ'S SECOND (FLYING) FORM: After experimenting with both the Boran X and Chirugai, I don't have a preference. Kurtis can jump and roll while using the gun. But if you're out of ammo or just want to be a badass, try the second phase using the Chirugai Blade, below.

You can also use a hybrid strategy: Equip the Chirugai and activate the psychic shield, as described below. Then switch back to the Boran X to attack. I found switching back and forth more difficult than just sticking with one weapon. But, as the kids say, you do you.

SECOND PHASE - BORAN X:

SECOND PHASE - CHIRUGAI:

Cutscene: As Kurtis turns to leave, Boaz uses her last ounce of strength to skewer him through the gut. He looses his magic blade and decapitates her. (Now why the heck didn't he do that in the first place?) But apparently it's too late for our hero. He slumps to the floor.

NOTE: The "Took Care" achievement/trophy unlocks automatically as The Lost Domain level loads.

*NOTE ON LEVEL MAPS: VGCartography's Angel of Darkness maps follow a slightly different level-numbering convention than I do. For example, the arena where Kurtis fights Boaz is included in the larger Vault of Trophies map, and other smaller side areas are merged with the adjacent hubs (e.g., Parisian Ghetto, Hall of Seasons). Visit VGCartography on DeviantArt and follow on Twitter/X and YouTube for more fantastic game maps.
