NOTES ON THE REMASTER: I have attempted to provide running kill, item, and secret counts.* (All 239 pickups are required for the "Hoarding Order" achievement/trophy.) I've also tried to cover all achievements/trophies, except New Game+. These guides are based on classic tank controls, but I hope they will be useful for those using modern controls. Follow this link for the archived classic guide. Chronicles does not include a "Restart Level" option, so I recommend making a new save at the beginning of each level in case you need to replay. Follow this link for Steam/GOG save files.
NOTE ON CINEMATICS: Now that the games include subtitles (under Options > Audio), I have removed the cinematic transcripts, leaving only basic descriptions. The classic guide does include transcripts.
INTRODUCTORY CINEMATICS: Rain pours down on a larger-than-life-size statue of our heroine. Winston, Lara's faithful manservant, places a wreath at the base of the statue, while an older couple, presumably Lara's parents, look on. The plaque below the statue reads: "Lara Croft: Once and Future Adventurer. For Her." The man and woman walk off, and Winston turns toward a limousine coming up the drive. A short time later, seated inside the limo, Winston and Father Bram Patrick Dunstan, the Croft family's priest, consider the notion that Lara may yet be alive. Neither seems too optimistic about this possibility.
Later, back at Croft Manor, Lara's old friend and colleague Charles Kane joins Winston and Father Dunstan. They share a pot of tea and reminisce about Lara's past adventures, beginning with her pursuit of the Philosopher's Stone in Rome.
In a flashback, Lara meets Larson and Pierre, whom you may remember from the first Tomb Raider, at the opera. She's looking to acquire an artifact, the Mercury Stone. They attempt to double-cross her, but she makes a flamboyant escape with the stone.
LEVEL 1: STREETS OF ROME (Remaster)
Updated: 12/16/25(†)
LEVEL MAP by VGCartography (used with permission)
Chronicles Remastered Video Walkthrough by Eldincy
Starting Inventory: Pistols (unlimited ammunition), binoculars, 3 flares, 3 small medipacks, 1 large medipack, Mercury Stone
Pickups: 33, including the Revolver, Laser Sight (twice), 3 keys, Saturn Symbol, and 3 Golden Rose Secrets*
Kills: 5*
NOTE: Lara gets new equipment at the beginning of each episode, so there's no need to conserve ammunition for any final boss. Feel free to use the more powerful weapons when you find them.
BACKSTAGE TRAINING AREA: Go through the doorway marked "Opera Backstage," just ahead on the left. (screenshots) Inside is a training area of sorts. Here Lara explains some of her basic moves as you go. Nothing here advances the plot; however, there are items to be found, including a secret and an achievement/trophy. So even seasoned raiders should explore this building. If you need any help with the moves or controls, see my Classic Controls and Strategy pages.
Follow Lara's instructions and vault onto the wooden crate (Forward + Action) just inside on the left. From there, climb to the concrete ledge above on the left. Move onto the metal grating at the other end of the ledge. Here Lara explains how to do a standing jump onto the metal tile on the next ledge: Hold Walk and move to the edge. (While holding Walk, Lara will not fall off the edge.) Then press Forward + Action together. Continue through the doorway ahead to a room with a wooden floor. Continue through the doorway ahead to a room with a wooden floor. Follow Lara's directions to take a running jump across the gap: Walk forward to the edge of the wood floor. Release Walk and tap Back once to take a short hop backwards. Then press and hold Forward, and almost immediately, press Jump. Lara will run forward, take off at the edge, and land on the far side of the gap. (screenshots)
IMPORTANT: Setting up jumps this way is crucial if you're new to the classic Tomb Raider games. With practice, you won't need to do it every time, but it's very useful early on. If you miss this particular jump, move out into the room, stand facing the dangling crate, then follow the passageway in the far left corner (screenshot) to get back to the first room with the forklift. Climb back up and try again.
After the scripted running jump, Lara won't tell you what to do, but before going on, stand close to the metal support strut on the left. Jump straight up and hold Action grab the edge. Press Forward to pull up. Stand over the small medipack (1) (1/239) and press Action to pick it up. Take a standing jump over to the metal scaffolding, and pick up some flares (2) (2/239). Then hold Duck and crawl into the low alcove to get a large medipack (3) (3/239). Crawl back out. Jump back to the strut where you found the small medipack. Then either step off the left edge, or safety drop: Turn around so Lara's back is to the edge, hold Action, press Back to drop and hang, then release Action to let go and drop to the floor. (You don't really need it here, but in the future, this maneuver will help minimize fall damage when Lara needs to drop from a height.) Continue through the doorway to the next area. (screenshots)
Here Lara says, "Now for the big jump," then explains how to do a running jump and grab: Walk to the edge, facing out across the wide gap. Hop back once. Then press Forward and almost immediately press Jump. While Lara is in the air, press and hold Action to grab the opposite ledge. Then press Forward to pull up. (screenshots)
Follow the elevated walkway around to the end. Do as Lara says and side flip (Jump + Left) onto the next ledge. Continue forward through the doorway to emerge higher up in the room with the dangling crate. Jump straight up and hold Action to grab the overhead bars. Continue holding Action and press Forward to monkey swing across the room. Once Lara is hanging from the darker section of ceiling beyond the bars, release Action to drop onto the ledge. (screenshots)
Climb the ladder (Action + directions) almost to the top. Then climb around the corner to the right and let go. Duck and crawl into the low opening. At the end of the tunnel, turn left, crawl to the edge, then press Jump to somersault out of the opening. (screenshots)
NOTE: In the remaster, you can set the Duck control to hold or toggle (under Options > Control > Duck Mode).
Lara is now standing on a high ledge in the first room. The forklift you saw earlier is below. Locate the switch in the alcove below the crawlspace you just came from. Stand next to it and press Action to throw the switch and open the nearby door. Go through and proceed down the stairs to a ROOM WITH A POOL AND STORAGE CAGES. Head for the far end of this room, turn left, and climb onto the lowest of several stacked crates. Climb onto the lowest of the stacked crates. Turn left, walk to the edge, then jump forward and grab the concrete ledge. Pull up. Here you'll find a pool to practice swimming. (screenshots)
The linked page with screenshots covers swimming basics. (screenshots)
When you have the hang of it, quick-save. Then swim through the underwater tunnel to another pool where you can surface. There are two other exits: a door at water level and a square opening on the bottom. Swim down through the square opening and follow the tunnel to a small room where you can climb out of the water (Action + Forward). Here you'll find some goodies: a large medipack, normal shotgun ammo, and revolver bullets (4-6) (4-6/239). Swim back to the previous pool. Surface and climb out of the water in the doorway you saw earlier. (This is where Lara gives the actual verbal tutorial for climbing out of the water.) Turn right to emerge on a ledge in the room with the large pool and storage cages. (screenshots)
Go through the doorway on the left and practice tightrope walking. As Lara instructs, approach the tightrope and press Action to step out onto it. Press and hold Forward to walk across. When Lara unbalances, briefly press the direction button or stick in the opposite direction from the way she's leaning. Try not to over-correct or she'll fall the other way. (screenshots)
After completing the tightrope walk, drop down and explore the supply room below. Search the metal shelves on the left (Action) to find some flares (7) (7/239). Push the shelves in the back left corner (stand close and hold Action + Forward) to uncover a box of revolver bullets (8) (8/239). Push the shelves in the right corner as far as they'll go to reveal a secret passage. Follow it to a small room with more shelves. Pick up Uzi clips (9) (9/239) on the floor and a golden rose (10) (10/239) on the shelves. (This is SECRET #1 in this level, 1 of 36 secrets in the game.) (screenshots)
NOTE: You can check the in-game Statistics screen at any time to make sure you haven't missed anything. Open your INVENTORY (Esc on keyboard, View/Create/Share on controller), press Left/Right to rotate to the Sunglasses, then select Statistics.
Return to the tightrope room and climb the crates to the upper level. You'll pass a few more shelves on the way out. The one on the right has a small medipack (11) (11/239). Continue to a dead end. Pull the switch to open the nearby door and go through into the first room with the forklift. If you completed the tutorial following all of Lara's verbal directions, the "Dress Rehearsal" achievement/trophy unlocks as you use the switch. Climb/drop down and return to the street where you began the level. (screenshots)
BACK ON THE STREET: Follow the street to the left, away from the level starting point. Pass under the high, curved archway then turn right and follow the narrow alley to an OPEN COURTYARD WITH A FOUNTAIN. Draw pistols and kill the Doberman (1) (1/62) that charges out of the alley ahead. If you like, you can jump up onto the fountain and shoot the dog from safety. (screenshots)
NOTE: You'll meet 4 more dogs during this level. If you lure each of them back to this fountain before killing it, you'll unlock the "Bark Square" achievement/trophy. I have to wonder at this pointespecially having played TR2 as wellwhether someone on the dev team had a bad dog bite experience while vacationing in Italy.
Make a mental note of the locked gate and keyhole near the fountain. We'll be back. For now, follow the narrow alley opposite the locked gate (i.e., to the right of the building with the red-and-white striped awning). This alley leads past a barred doorway to a panel with a carved face. Inside its "mouth" is a mechanism that opens a gate at the opposite end of the street from where you began the level. Behind that gate is another "Mouth of Truth" mechanism. The gate is not actually timed. So if you don't care about achievements, just use the first mechanism and make your leisurely way to the second one (following the route described below). (screenshots)
To unlock the "What a Horrid Idea!" achievement/trophy, you'll need to use the first mechanism then sprint to the second and use it within 16 seconds. Quick-save before operating the first mechanism. (Use F5/F9 to quick-save/load on keyboard. Check Options > Control > Shortcuts for your system's controls.) You don't have to do this in one try, but if you don't make it, it's easier to reload than to run all the way back. As soon as you use the first mechanism, press Look and Roll simultaneously, to skip the cutscene showing the gate opening and position Lara so she's ready to run. Sprint forward toward the corner. Ease off the Sprint button as you round the corner to the right, then continue sprinting toward the fountain courtyard. Turn left before the fountain. Continue forward. Then run through the small, square doorway on the right. In this next small small courtyard, veer left and continue down the steps and through the gate to the second mechanism. As you go, you'll need to sprint as much as possible, but briefly releasing the Sprint button as you round each corner makes it easier to steer. Also, release Sprint just before you reach the second mechanism, so Lara doesn't crash into the carved disc and lose time straightening herself out. Press Action as soon as you see the hand icon. If you've made it in time, the achievement/trophy should pop as you operate the mechanism. (screenshots)
NOTES: There is no Sprinting tutorial, so you'll need to practice under pressure. Sprint is labeled "Dash" in the Controls menu. To view/change the default button, open your INVENTORY (Esc on keyboard, View/Create/Share on controller), press Left/Right to rotate to the Sunglasses, then select Options > Control > Change Control. There's also a "Dash Mode" option, which you can set to Hold or Toggle. I prefer to hold the button while running to sprint. Then you can release and re-press the button as you round corners for more control. If you're proficient with Modern Controls, you may have better luck, since Lara turns more easily, but this sequence is doable with Classic Tank Controls. It just takes patience. You'll notice the sprint/dash meter appears at the top right corner of the screen when Lara is sprinting. When it runs down, she'll need to recover before sprinting again, but this won't be a factor here if you follow this strategy.
For more information about the Mouth of Truth panels in this level, and other real-world items and locations featured in the games, check out the Arte-Factual series from Tomb Raider Horizons.
When you use the second mechanism, behind the gate, a flock of bats flies out and tries to mess up Lara's hairdo. You can't kill them, so either flee or crouch in one of the corners near the mechanism. She'll take little or no damage that way. (screenshot)
BUILDING INTERIORS: After using the second mechanism, you'll see that you've raised a block that will enable you to reach the ARCHED BALCONY above. Climb onto the block, but before going on, turn right and take a running jump to grab the edge of the wall above the square doorway. Pull up to find a small medipack (12) (12/239). Turn around and take a carefully angled standing jump from the wall to the balcony (or drop down and climb up). (screenshots)
Follow the passageway up to a SMALL ROOM WITH RED FURNITURE. Go through to a balcony above the FOUNTAIN COURTYARD. Continue straight across and drop into a hallway with orange walls and white molding. Draw pistols, shoot the window on the right, and pick up the revolver bullets (13) (13/239) on the sill. (screenshots)
You're now overlooking another COURTYARD WITH A CLOTHESLINE. There's a health pack on the windowsill off to the left, but there's also another Doberman (2) (2/62) below. To get the health safely, without any tricky jumping, move back into the hallway, follow it around toward the stairs leading down. Shoot out the window on the right, and take the small medipack (14) (14/239). (screenshots)
Whether or not you're after the "Bark Square" achievement/trophy, I'd recommend hanging from the windowsill to get the dog's attention. Then pull up onto the sill. If you don't care about the achievement, turn around, and shoot the dog from above. (Skip the rest of this paragraph.) If you want the achievement, you'll need to get the dog's attention and lure it to the fountain before killing it. Quick-save. Then run down the stairs into the alcove on the left, then left again into a narrow alleyway. The dog will chase Lara, but if you've dangled from the windowsill first, it will come from the courtyard behind you, rather than blocking the alley. Run/jump/sprint to the end of the alley and pull the switch to open the gate on the left. (If the dog pins Lara against the switch and you can't move, reload your quick-save and try again.) Run through the open gate and run/jump/sprint straight on to the FOUNTAIN COURTYARD. If you like, you can jump up onto the fountain before shooting the dog. When it's dead, return past the switch to the CLOTHESLINE COURTYARD. (screenshots)
NOTE: Lara's health bar displays at the upper right corner of the screen when taking damage, or when you have a weapon drawn. If Lara suffered more than a few dog bites, you can heal by using a medipack. Open INVENTORY (Esc on keyboard, View/Create/Share on controller), press Left/Right to rotate to the small medi pack. Then press Action to use it. A small medi pack restores half Lara's health. A large one gives full health. This game is fairly generous with health items, but don't use more than you actually need. If you're playing with keyboard, 0 is the hotkey for small medi packs, 9 for large. A full list is under Options > Control > Shortcuts. Also note that Lara's health is restored at the end of each level. So if you're close to finishing, try to get by without healing.
CLOTHESLINE COURTYARD (again): A third Doberman (3) (3/62) lurks behind the double doors below the window where you found the revolver ammo earlier. Quick-save, open the doors, and if you're after that achievement/trophy, immediately roll and sprint back to the FOUNTAIN COURTYARD the way you came. Hop up on the edge of the fountain and shoot the dog from safety. Then return once more to the CLOTHESLINE COURTYARD. Enter the room where the third dog came from and retrieve a large medipack (15) (15/239) on the floor and wideshot shotgun ammo (16) (16/239) sitting on a crate. (screenshots)
NOTE: If you choose not to lure the dogs to the fountain, I still recommend following the passageway at ground level and using the switch to open the gate that leads back to the fountain. (screenshot) This isn't strictly necessary, but it but it could save you some backtracking if you fall while jumping from ledge to ledge.
Climb the stairs leading up out of the CLOTHESLINE COURTYARD. Halfway up, shoot out the window on the right. Vault up onto the windowsill and jump across the alley into the neighboring house. Inside, take the first left. At the top of the ramp you'll find a GOLDEN KEY (17) (17/239). Pick up the key, then side flip over the railing and return to the doorway at the bottom of the ramp. Turn left and continue to the top. (screenshot)
Cutscene: A panoramic view of the FOUNTAIN COURTYARD, which now contains a fourth Doberman. The camera comes to rest on the locked gate.
Jump over the railing onto the red-and-white awning. Pick up some flares (18) (18/239). Then shoot the dog (4) (4/62) before dropping to the ground, or jump down onto the fountain and kill the dog from there. Use the GOLDEN KEY to open the gate near the fountain. (screenshot)
COURTYARD WITH PALM TREES AND TIGHTROPE: Enter cautiously, Larson (not killed) waits in this courtyard, up on a balcony to the left. Ready pistols and let him have it. (If you're trying to conserve health, you can stand in the doorway with Lara's right shoulder toward the courtyard. Side flip out into the courtyard while firing, then flip back to the doorway.) When you've reduced his health by about a third, he flees. Pick up a small medipack (19) (19/239) in the arched alcove. Then go through the doorway below where Larson was standing. First head left, down a ramp to a room with stacked boxes, where you'll find the FIRST GARDEN KEY (20) (20/239). (screenshots)
Return up the ramp and continue past the entrance to the top. Larson is once again waiting on the other side of the courtyard. If you approach the doorway at an angle, run forward and start shooting, then hop back, run forward, and hop back, while firing continuously, you should be able to run him off without taking too much damage. Tightrope walk across to the opposite balcony. (Review the tutorial if necessary.) Go through the doorway where Larson disappeared. Drop down to the street and use the switch to open a gate leading back to the FOUNTAIN COURTYARD. (This will be especially helpful if you're going for the "Bark Square" achievement/trophy.) (screenshots)
Head away from the switch toward a T-intersection. Off to the right end of this WIDE STREET is a GATED GARDEN. This is where you'll use the GARDEN KEY, but you'll need another one first. Follow the street to the left. Go through the small, square doorway. Continue along this hallway, picking up some revolver ammo (21) (21/239) in a small room on the left. Make a mental note of the LOCKED WOODEN GATE here. This is the location of the second secret. We'll return for it later. (screenshots)
Continue upstairs. Pick up the REVOLVER (22) (22/239) on the landing. (You probably won't miss it because the camera won't let you look at anything else.) Turn around and follow the ramp up to the double doors. Push them open and enter a SMALL ROOM WITH WINE BARRELS. Retrieve the LASER SIGHT (23) (23/239) on the left. Then approach the padlocked gate on the right. (screenshots)
To break the padlock, combine the REVOLVER and LASER SIGHT: Open your INVENTORY, select the Revolver, then choose 'Combine.' At this point, the only possible combination is with the Laser Sight, so just press Action to do this, then Action again to equip the gun. Hold Look for laser-sight view. Aim at the padlock. Use direction buttons or left stick to aim, Duck/Crouch and Dash/Sprint buttons to zoom in and out. Then fire once. Or, to conserve revolver ammo, stand close to the padlock, facing it. Draw pistols and fire continuously as you move into a crouch. The lock should shatter on the way down. (screenshots)
IMPORTANT: If you're hunting achievements, save before entering the alcove. Maybe also top up Lara's health. The "Tail Innocence" achievement/trophy requires you to avoid being bitten by rats throughout the game. If you have full health, it's easier to tell if Lara has been bitten. (In New Game Plus, rat bites poison Lara, so there's no question.)
To get in and out safely, stand just outside the alcove with Lara's back to the GARDEN KEY and the big wine barrel on her left. Backflip onto the tile with the key to trigger the rat swarm, but don't take the key yet. Immediately run forward, then left, as the rats scamper after. Keep running through the doorway and jump over the railing. As soon as Lara lands on the steps below and regains her footing, turn right and run forward. Then take the next right, into the small room with the wooden gate, where you found the revolver ammo earlier. If you stand near the gate, the rats should not approach. (screenshots)
You can then use Photo Mode to do some reconnaissance. (Press F3 on keyboard or click both sticks on controller to open Photo Mode, then WASD + mouse or left + right sticks to direct the camera.) The rats usually get stuck just outside the doorway or on the ledge with the railing. If you're able to hear the rats chittering, wait until they go quiet before venturing out. Otherwise, wait about 45 seconds just to be safe. If you're not sure whether Lara was bitten, try using a small medi pack. If you started with full health and didn't lose any, Lara will say "No." Then you'll know you're good. (screenshots)
NOTE: This is the first of five rat swarms in the game. There are two in TRAJAN'S MARKETS (Rome) and two more in the GALLOWS TREE (Ireland). Two of these swarms can be avoided completely, so you'll only need to deal with three in total. I'll give you a heads-up when we get there.
Return upstairs to the SMALL ROOM WITH WINE BARRELS and pick up the SECOND GARDEN KEY (24) (24/239). (screenshot)
LOCKED GARDEN: Return down the stairs and follow the hallway back to the WIDE STREET. Continue past the side street on the right with the gate leading back to the FOUNTAIN COURTYARD. At the end of the WIDE STREET, turn left into a walled area with 2 key receptacles. Use the GARDEN KEYS here to unlock the gate around the corner. Exit this area, turn right, then right again and enter the GARDEN. (screenshots)
Cutscenes: When Lara uses the GARDEN KEYS, we get a view of the garden interior, including a small building with three gargoyles. When she enters the garden and approaches the gargoyle building, there's a longer cinematic, in which Lara inserts the MERCURY STONE in its proper receptacle. She hears sounds from above, which she assumes correctly to be Pierre and Larson spying on her from the rooftops. She leaves them to it, and after some bickering, Pierre convinces Larson to let Lara do the work of finding the other three stones this gate requires.
After the cutscene, Lara is facing a doorway leading to a room with a small pool, but this is not the exit. Face the building with the gargoyles and stone receptacles. Then follow the passageway in the far right corner, up several ramps, to the open area above. (screenshots)
Cutscene: A panoramic view of a temple with a bell hanging at the top.
TEMPLE WITH BELL: In case you missed the subtle hint in the cutscene, the camera shifts to the bell and won't budge until you move Lara out of range or press Look. There are three doors here: one above on the left, one just below the bell, and one at the base of the temple. You can also pick up another LASER SIGHT (25) (25/239) at the top of the steps under the bell and a convenient box of revolver bullets (26) (26/239) behind the columns to the right of the upper door. (screenshots)
Combine the REVOLVER and LASER SIGHT (assuming you didn't already do so earlier), press Look for laser-sight view, aim at the bell, and fire once. When you hit it squarely, the bell rings, and door on the left side of the temple opens. You don't see this, but the wooden gate back in the area where you avoided the rat swarm also opens. (screenshots)
Backtrack for SECRET #2 and achievement/trophy: Return down the ramp the way you came, exit the garden, and turn right onto the WIDE STREET. Continue past the side street on the left with the gate leading back to the FOUNTAIN COURTYARD. (If you haven't already used the switch to open this gate, do it now.) Continue through the doorway at the end of the WIDE STREET, back into the area where you avoided the rat swarm earlier. In the little anteroom on the left, before the stairs, the LOCKED WOODEN GATE is now open. Do not rush in. (screenshots)
The fifth and final Doberman (5) (5/62) spawns on the right when you enter the inner room. If you're going for the "Bark Square" achievement/trophy, position Lara in the doorway with the wooden gate, just before the second white line on the floor. Quick-save. Then roll to trigger the dog and come up facing the the other way. Run forward through the anteroom into the hallway with the dog nipping at Lara's heels. Turn right, run/sprint along the corridor, then turn left into the WIDE STREET. Run/sprint forward, then right, through the gate next to the switch, and on to the FOUNTAIN COURTYARD. If you like, you can jump up onto the fountain and shoot the dog from safety. (Don't forget to switch back to pistols for unlimited ammo.) If you've lured all 5 dogs here before killing them, the achievement/trophy should pop. (screenshots)
Return to the room behind the wooden gate. Search the shelves to find a large medipack (27) (27/239) and golden rose (28) (28/239). (This rose is SECRET #2, 2/36 secrets in the game.) Return once again to the WIDE STREET, left through the GARDEN with the gargoyles, and up the ramps to the TEMPLE WITH THE BELL. (screenshots)
OPENING THE UPPER TEMPLE DOOR: Climb the stairs and pull up into the doorway on the left. (This is The door that opened when you shot the bell.) Walk to the edge. Then take a standing jump across the gap, grab the edge of the opposite opening, and pull up. (Or take a running jump, pressing Action to lower Lara's arc so she doesn't bang her head and fall.) Endure the swarm of bats as you use the mechanism inside the "Mouth of Truth" to open the upper door of the TEMPLE. (Or crouch in the corner until the bats disperse, then operate the mechanism.) Jump back across the gap to the TEMPLE. (screenshots)
Turn so the temple is behind Lara. Then climb/jump onto the high stone wall on the right. Follow the wall around the perimeter of the garden to the far end. Take a running jump onto the terracotta-tiled roof. Cross the tiled roof and take another running jump into the alcove in the far left corner. Here you'll find revolver bullets and a large medipack (29-30) (29-30/239). Return across the rooftops to the wall surrounding the TEMPLE, but don't drop down yet. (screenshots)
If you like, you can take a little detour for an achievement/trophy. Follow the high wall opposite the temple almost to the corner. Walk to the edge and take a standing jump down onto the building with the gargoyles. Walk to the edge directly above the gargoyles, turn around, and hold Action to hang from the edge. Now do a handstand: Continue holding Action to hang on. Then hold Walk and press Forward, and Lara will pull up in a graceful handstand walkover, unlocking the "To the Envy of Venus" achievement/trophy. Safety drop to the ground (i.e., hang from the edge then let go) to minimize fall damage. Return to the TEMPLE via the passageway to the right of the gargoyle building. (screenshots)
INSIDE THE TEMPLE: Enter the temple through the upper middle door, which you opened using the "Mouth of Truth" switch. Here you'll find two ravens on pedestals. Go through the doorway in the back left corner. Use the switch to shatter one of the raven statues, revealing a dove. On your way back to the room with the birds, a flock of bats attacks. Crouch in the corner to minimize the damage. Then climb up near the dove pedestal and press Action to rotate it. This opens a door elsewhere and sets the battering ram above swinging. Go through the other corner doorway and follow the passage, through the door you just opened, and up to a ledge near the battering ram. (screenshots)
If you don't care about achievements/trophies, just hang from the edge to the right of the doorway and traverse around to the right, below the ram, until you can pull up into the corner alcove. (screenshots)
Or, for the "Not Ram Us" achievement/trophy, carefully approach the battering ram, stopping just before Lara reaches the rubble-strewn floor tile. If you step on that tile, Lara can be hit by the ram. Sidestep (Walk + directions) left toward the wall, quick-save, and watch the swinging ram. As it begins to swing away, run forward, and just before Lara reaches the edge, roll and hold Action to drop and grab edge. If your timing is good, she'll end up hanging just below the ram and the achievement/trophy will pop. Now traverse to the right until you can pull up into the corner alcove. (screenshots)
Use the switch in the alcove to turn the second raven into a dove. Safety drop to the floor. Turn the second dove pedestal to open the door outside at the base of the temple. (screenshots)
Backtrack for SECRET #3: Exit the temple, but before going through the door below, retrieve another secret. Turn right and climb into the raised doorway. (This is the door you opened earlier by shooting the bell.) Jump across the alley to the room with the "Mouth of Truth" niche like you did before. Solving the raven/dove puzzle also opened two alcoves in this room containing a small medipack (31) (31/239) and a golden rose (32) (32/239). (This rose is SECRET #3, 3/36 secrets in the game.) Jump back across the gap to the TEMPLE. (screenshots)
Go through the door at the base of the temple and get the SATURN SYMBOL (33) (33/239). Step back outside to end the level. (screenshot)
Cutscene: Lara emerges from the temple only to be ambushed by Pierre and Larson. Much banter ensues. Larson takes the Saturn Symbol and places it in its proper receptacle below the gargoyles. But without the remaining stones, the gate goes into a trap sequence and blasts Larson with fire. Lara advises them both to skedaddle, if they know what's good for them, and saunters away to the next level.

12/16/25 - Remastered guide first posted.
*NOTES ON PICKUPS, KILLS, AND SECRETS: You must collect all 239 items in the game for the "Hoarding Order" achievement/trophy. To this end, I have provided a running pickup count for each level, followed by a running count for the entire game. For example, a "small medipack (3) (36/239)" is the third pickup in its level and the 36th pickup in the game. To check your progress, open your INVENTORY (Esc on keyboard, View/Create/Share on controller), press Left/Right to rotate to the Sunglasses, then select Statistics. (screenshot) In later levels, there are a few items that are not counted as official pickups. These are indicated in green type but are not added to the sequential count.
There is no achievement/trophy for all kills, but the game tracks these on the Statistics screen as well, so I have included a sequential count. For example, a "lion (7) (14/62)" is the seventh kill in its level and the 14th of (approximately) 62 kills in the game. There are some enemies that Lara doesn't kill outright for various reasons (e.g., stealth, defeating indirectly, etc.). These are indicated with orange type but are not added to the sequential kill count. So, your final kill count may vary depending on how you approach certain situations.
Chronicles includes 36 golden rose secrets. In the classic game, finding all secrets unlocked a collection of storyboards and concept art titled "Special Features." This is missing from the remaster but can be found on YouTube. Secrets in the remaster count toward the total number of pickups, and there are achievements/trophies for finding all secrets in each section (Rome, Russia, etc.). Secrets are also tracked on the Statistics screen. (screenshot)
