NOTES ON THE REMASTER: I have attempted to provide running kill, item, and secret counts. (Details are in a footnote following the first-level walkthrough.) I have also tried to cover all achievements/trophies, except New Game+. These guides are based on classic tank controls, but I hope they will be useful for those using modern controls. Follow this link for the archived classic guide. Chronicles does not include a "Restart Level" option, so I recommend making a new save at the beginning of each level in case you need to replay. Follow this link for Steam/GOG save files.
LEVEL 4: THE BASE (Remaster)
Updated: 12/16/25(†)
LEVEL MAP by VGCartography (used with permission)
Chronicles Remastered Video Walkthrough by Eldincy
Starting Inventory: Pistols (unlimited ammunition), binoculars, 3 flares, 3 small medipacks, 1 large medipack
Pickups: 18, including Uzis, Desert Eagle Pistol, Laser Sight, 2 keys, 1 keycard, a fuse, and 3 Golden Rose Secrets*
Kills: 10
NOTE: Lara gets new equipment at the beginning of each episode, so there's no need to conserve ammunition for any huge final boss. You'll need the Desert Eagle for one achievement/trophy near the end of this level. Otherwise, feel free to use the more powerful weapons as you find them.
At the beginning of the level, Lara slides down a chute and lands in a dimly lit hallway. Follow the stairs to the bottom. Step forward into a WAREHOUSE WITH STORAGE CRATES AND A MECHANICAL CLAW. (screenshots)
Cutscene: A short flythrough shows the layout of the room and the mechanical claw moving overhead. The camera then zooms in on the crane operator in a glassed-in control room.
There are two possible achievements/trophies here: "Crane Game" requires you to obtain all pickups in this WAREHOUSE without allowing the claw to drop down even once. For "I'll Get You Next Time!," you'll need to climb to the highest point in the WAREHOUSE then dodge the descending claw three times in a row. These aren't too difficult once you get the lay of the land, but I recommend saving in a new slot before entering the warehouse. Then you can quick-save periodically if things are going well. Just don't overwrite your manual save until you get both achievements.
While exploring, you can keep Lara safe from the mechanical claw by running across the open areas and taking cover in the doorways and alcoves along the outer edges of the room. The claw only drops if Lara is standing in the open where it could potentially grab her. Also, the claw casts a circular shadow on the floor. If this shadow pauses on the tile where Lara is standing, you'll know the claw is about to drop. You can usually roll or jump out of the way in time to avoid being hit. But if it drops, even if it misses Lara, you'll fail the "Crane Game" and have to reload.
This is not a speedrun, but you do need to move quickly when Lara is out in the open, so the claw doesn't zero in on her. Start by running/sprinting straight across the room to the doorway with the swipe-card lock below the balcony. Lara is safe here. Turn around to face the entrance. Then head to the right, hugging the wall, to the metal locker below the control room. Search inside to find a SILVER KEY (1) (82/239). (screenshots)
Turn around (to face away from the locker) and run forward, along the right side of the large stack of crates in the middle of the room then on toward the big roll-up doors on the far wall. When you reach the far wall, turn right, then move behind another stack of crates into the doorway. Use the SILVER KEY in the keyhole set into the left door to open it. (screenshots)
Enter and go upstairs to a SECURITY OFFICE. Shoot at the 2 soldiers (1-2) (17-18/62) through the window. Then back up along the hallway so they can't return fire. Finish them off as they emerge from the office. One soldier drops a SWIPE CARD (2) (83/239) when he dies. You'll also find the UZIS (3) (84/239) in a locker inside the office. Return downstairs to the WAREHOUSE. (screenshots)
Now you're headed for the doorway directly opposite this one, on the far side of the room (i.e., below and to the left of the CONTROL ROOM). Run forward around the various crates to get there. Use your borrowed SWIPE CARD in the card reader to open the door. Enter and shoot an aggressive German shepherd (3) (19/62). Debris blocks the hallway. Draw pistols and jump up to shoot the crooked grate on the right. Climb into the duct and retrieve a golden rose (4) (85/239) (SECRET #1, 10/36). (screenshots)
NOTE: You don't need the golden rose for the "Crane Game" achievement/trophy, but we're all completionists here, right?
Return to the WAREHOUSE. Turn left and follow the wall, past the locker where you found the SILVER KEY earlier, to the other door with a card reader. (You hid here earlier but didn't have a card then.) Use the SWIPE CARD to open it and climb the stairs to one of the balconies overlooking the WAREHOUSE. (screenshots)
If you want the "Crane Game" achievement/trophy, you'll need to make two more pickups without hesitating long enough for the mechanical claw to target Lara and drop. The items are on top of the stacked crates on the middle left and far right side of the room. (screenshots) You can find your own way, or follow this route:
Position Lara at the right side of the break in the balcony railing. Face the box wrapped in chains below on the right. Hop back once. Quick-save, then take a running jump from the balcony onto the chain-wrapped crate. Keep running as you veer left and jump onto the lower tier of the the stacked crates in the middle of the room, then the upper tier. Run forward and around to the left, and and without stopping, jump at the edge to land on the lower tier of the next stack of crates. (The ammo pickup is now directly ahead on the tier above. The entrance is below on the right.) Take a standing jump up to the next tier. Run forward and grab the Uzi ammo (5) (86/239). (screenshots)
Immediately roll and run forward off the edge. If you're able to land on the lower tier, then the floor, Lara won't lose any health. Turn right and run/sprint across the WAREHOUSE floor to the second swipe-card doorway. Then climb the stairs to the balcony once more. (screenshots)
Now, we'll go after the health pack on the far right corner crates. Quick-save if things have gone well so far. Then take a running jump down to the chain-wrapped box, just like you did before. Again, without hesitation, run around to the far corner of this box and jump onto the stacked crates in the middle of the room. This time, run straight through the space between the stacked crates. Aim for the far right corner of this stack. Continue running and jump across to the lower tier of the next stack, landing just to the right of the single wooden crate. Run forward another step or two. Pivot to the right then take a standing jump to the upper tier. Run forward and pick up the small medipack (6) (87/239). (screenshots)
If you've gotten all pickups so far (the golden rose doesn't count), and the claw has not descended at any point, the "Crane Game" achievement/trophy should unlock. (screenshots)
Next comes "I'll Get You Next Time!," which requires you to "dodge the falling claw three times in a row at the highest point of the warehouse." Make sure Lara is safe from the claw. Then quick-save. Stand still and wait for the claw to move directly above. You'll see the circular shadow on the floor at Lara's feet. When it stops moving, wait a moment, then roll out of the way just before the claw descends. Repeat until the achievement/trophy pops. (screenshots)
NOTE: The timing is a little finicky. You need to wait as long as possible but not too long, obviously, before rolling. So it may take more than three consecutive dodges before the achievement actually unlocks. Also, you don't have to attempt this immediately after playing the "Crane Game." It can be done on any of the top-level crates.
Now we're headed for the balcony to the left of the CRANE CONTROL ROOM. We'll start from the spot where we picked up the small medipack and unlocked the last two achievements/trophies. (screenshots) (If you miss a jump or already dropped down to the floor, see the note below.)
Continue to avoid the claw as you take a running jump down onto the stack of boxes in the middle of the room. Jump or climb onto the single wooden crate, near the right corner if possible. Turn left (so the CONTROL ROOM is on Lara's right) and step back if necessary to set up for the next jump. Now take a running jump from the wooden crate to the chain-wrapped containers with the white octagons. If you aim for the middle of this stack and don't press Action, Lara should land right at the edge. You can then take a standing jump up onto the wooden crate ahead, then a running jump to grab the edge of the balcony where the railing is missing. Lara is safe here. Pull up. (screenshots)
NOTE: If you miss a jump, or if you already climbed down to the floor after getting the achievements, just head for the swipe-card door below and to the right of the CONTROL ROOM. Climb the stairs to the balcony. Jump over to the stacked crates in the middle of the room just as you did earlier. Climb/jump up onto the single wooden crate. Then continue following the path described above to reach the balcony. (screenshot)
CRANE CONTROL ROOM: Follow the walkway around to the right. Press the red button to open the door. Enter. (screenshots)
Cutscene: Lara overpowers the crane operator and uses the claw to rip out a section of wall in the room below.
Search the cabinets in the control room to find Uzi clips and a small medipack (7-8) (88-89/239). (Briefly admire how they gave the guy a floral-patterned thermos in the remaster. So cute!) Use the button in the doorway to open the other exit from the CONTROL ROOM. This leads back to the balcony where you started your jumping. (screenshots)
WIDE CORRIDOR WITH TRAIN TRACKS: Drop down and go through the opening Lara made when she ripped out the wall. As you advance along the tracks, 2 soldiers (4-5) (20-21/62) emerge at the far end. Take them out—there's plenty of room to retreat and maneuver—then continue to the end of the tracks, where a roll-down door blocks the way. Go through the doorway on the left. (The stairs on the right lead to a locked door, and you don't have the key yet.) Follow the hallway outdoors. (screenshots)
SUBMARINE DOCK - LEFT SIDE: A tall stack of crates separates this side of the dock from the RIGHT SIDE. Climb onto the box on the train car and from there onto the crate hanging from the crane. Take a running jump onto the boxes stacked against the building. Do not press Action during this jump or Lara won't make it. Climb to the top of the stack to get a golden rose (9) (90/239) (SECRET #2, 11/36). Climb down. Then use the SWIPE CARD in the card reader to open the door behind the crane. (screenshots)
GENERATOR ROOM: There's a soldier (6) (22/62) lurking inside on the left. Kill him and take the SILVER KEY (10) (91/239) he drops. Examine the generator with the yellow fuses on the back. You'll see it's missing a fuse. Go back outside and re-enter the main building. Follow the hallway, cross the TRACKS, and go through the door on the opposite side. Climb the stairs to a locked door. Use the SILVER KEY to unlock it. Step outside. (screenshots)
Cutscene: Lara overhears two men talking on the dock below. One, a Russian admiral, has apparently sold his services to the other, a crime boss. The admiral, Yarofev, orders his sailors to load the rest of the cargo and prepare for launch. Then both men board the waiting submarine.
SUBMARINE DOCK - RIGHT SIDE: Go to the right end of the ledge, where it bends downward. Take a running jump to grab the corner ledge; pull up. Continue to the left end of the corner ledge then take a running jump to grab the ledge nearest the submarine. Pull up and take the LASER SIGHT (11) (92/239) and some Desert Eagle ammo (12) (93/239). Safety drop to the ground. (screenshots)
NOTES: If you miss any of these jumps, either reload and try again, or use the SWIPE CARD in the card reader to open the door below the first ledge. Continue with the LOCKER ROOM and SECRET #3 (below), but don't forget to return for the LASER SIGHT afterwards. Also, it's possible to drop into the water near the submarine to get a glimpse of the next secret, but you can't reach it yet. (screenshot)
LOCKER ROOM: Use the SWIPE CARD to open the door below the ledge where you entered this area. Enter and shoot another German shepherd (7) (23/62) lurking around the corner. Search the lockers to find the DESERT EAGLE PISTOL, Desert Eagle clips, a small medipack, a FUSE, and Uzi clips (13-17) (94-98/239). Find the trapdoor on the floor in the far right corner of the flooded showers. Stand Lara at the edge of the grate and press Action to open it. (screenshots)
Light a flare and quick-save if you like. Then swim down through the flooded passage. Turn right at the T-intersection. Follow the long tunnel through various twists and turns. Eventually you'll surface in a small room where you'll find another golden rose (18) (99/239) (SECRET #3, 12/36). From here you can see the submarine through the bars. Swim back through the tunnel to the LOCKER ROOM. Enter the short passageway on the left, press the button to open the door, and go through to emerge near the end of the TRAIN TRACKS. (screenshots)
Head straight across the tracks to the door leading to the outdoor area with the crane. Before going outside take a moment to prepare. Combine the DESERT EAGLE with the LASER SIGHT and save the game. (screenshots)
NOTE: If you missed the LASER SIGHT, DESERT EAGLE, and/or SECRET #3, go back for them now. Instead, of heading straight across the TRACKS, climb the stairs to the ledges overlooking the SUBMARINE DOCK - RIGHT SIDE. Follow the walkthrough above to get whatever you missed. Then return through the LOCKER ROOM to the TRACKS.
SUBMARINE DOCK - RIGHT SIDE (again): There are now snipers (8-9) (24-25/62) in two of the high windows. The "Double Down" achievement/trophy requires you to kill both snipers without taking damage.
Run/sprint behind the two wooden crates against the right wall of the open area. Lara is safe here. The snipers are hiding behind the two broken windows above and only lean out when Lara moves into the open. So you can deal with them one at a time. (screenshots)
Position Lara facing the wooden crate with the train car on her right. Step to the right corner of the crate but not too far out. Then pivot just slightly to face the left side of the first sniper's window. Sidestep once to the right. Press Look for laser-sight view, then immediately pan upward. If you've set it up correctly, the first sniper will be directly in your crosshairs—no need to zoom in or pan left/right—and one headshot should take him out. You don't have to one-shot the snipers for the achievement, but the faster you are, the less time they'll have to return fire. If Lara hasn't taken any damage in the process, save and continue. (screenshots)
Next, head for the two stacked wooden crates below the second sniper's window. Use the same basic tactic here. Stand facing the right side of the crates, safe from the sniper above. Pivot a wee bit so when Lara sidesteps to the right, you can activate the laser sight, pan straight upward, and pop the sniper before he can fire back. If you're able to kill both snipers without taking damage, the achievement/trophy registers immediately. (screenshots)
GENERATOR ROOM (again): Return through the doorway below the second sniper's window to the GENERATOR ROOM. Go behind the generator and place the FUSE you collected earlier in the slot where a fuse is missing. A door opens nearby, and the lights and fans come on. (screenshots)
NOTE: In the unlikely event you missed the FUSE, it's back in the LOCKER ROOM (above) where you found the DESERT EAGLE.
Go back around the generator. Kill the dog (10) (26/62) that enters from outside. Then go through the door that just opened—it's just before the side room with the generator—and press the button. (screenshots)
Cutscene: The crane rotates, moving the dangling box.
Return outdoors. Climb onto the box on the train car. From there take a running jump to grab the crate hanging from the crane. Pull up. Then take a running jump to hull of the submarine. (screenshot)
Cutscene: Lara lands on top of the sub and hides behind a crate. A stevedore emerges from the hold, and Lara makes a noise to attract his attention. When he comes to investigate, she subdues him. (The "Damn, You're Not Good!" achievement/trophy registers automatically at this point.) Lara then sneaks below. After taking stock of her surroundings she mutters, "Hmph. Economy class."

*NOTES ON PICKUPS, SECRETS, AND KILLS: There are 239 pickups and approximately 62 kills in the entire game. The total number of pickups includes 36 golden rose secrets. All pickups are required for the "Hoarding Order" achievement/trophy. Finding all secrets unlocks an achievement/trophy at the end of each level set (Rome, Russia, etc.) See the footnote following the STREETS OF ROME walkthrough for details on how these statistics are tracked in-game and in this walkthrough.
